About the Club
Established in 1898, Caton United Football Club has a long-standing presence in community football in Lancashire. For well over a century, the Club has embodied the spirit of grassroots English football — providing opportunities for local players to compete, develop and represent Caton in county-wide competition.
More than 125 years after its founding, Caton United remains one of the enduring fixtures in local football life, rooted in the small Lancashire village of Caton-with-Littledale. While formal records from the earliest years are limited, newspaper archives from the 1930s indicate the Club actively organised matches and training as a community sporting organisation at least as far back as that period, with practice fixtures involving strong local participation.
Over time the Club developed a reputation for being a focal point of competitive amateur football in the Lancaster area — upholding traditions of fair play, local rivalry, and community involvement that remain central to its identity.
Today, Caton United competes in Division Two of the West Lancashire Football League, one of the longstanding non-league competitions in the north of England.
The West Lancashire Football League was originally formed in 1904 and has grown into a structured multi-division competition encompassing over 40 clubs across Lancashire and neighbouring counties.
Caton United’s election into the League’s ranks in recent seasons marked an important chapter in its ongoing development as a competitive side at this level.
Division Two offers consistently competitive fixtures against a range of local sides, fostering both sporting challenge and community engagement. Matches take place regularly throughout the football season, with results, league tables and reports published via the League’s official fixtures programme.
The Club plays its home fixtures at Caton Sports Field (LA2 9QS) — a central local sports facility that supports football activity and serves as a meeting point for supporters and participants.
As a community-based club, Caton United has historically been embedded in local sporting culture, maintaining strong ties with residents, volunteers, and grassroots partners across Caton and the surrounding Lancaster district.
Caton United fields its first team in regular league competition and is actively committed to nurturing football at a grassroots level. The Club offers a platform for players of all backgrounds to participate in league fixtures, contributing to the wider football ecosystem in Lancashire.
Beyond competitive matches, the Club’s activities and fixtures help sustain local sporting traditions and strengthen community networks — reinforcing the position of Caton United as an essential part of village life.
